'The Voice' Winner Javier Colon to Play Ray Charles on 'The Playboy Club'

'The Voice' Winner Javier Colon to Play Ray Charles on 'The Playboy Club' Not a bad year for Javier Colon. The winner of the inaugural season of "The Voice" is slated to appear as legendary soul singer Ray Charles in an upcoming episode of the new NBC series "The Playboy Club," according to Billboard.

One of NBC's new marquee original dramatic series, "The Playboy Club" takes place in Chicago in the early 60's. Like ABC's "Pan Am," the show occupies the same romantically stylized space as AMC's wildly successful "Mad Men," only with, you know, more Playboy Bunnies and such.

While the show's ravishing starlet Amber Heard has drawn plenty of well-deserved attention for her ahem talents, what's perhaps more interesting (okay "also interesting") is that the show's producers are apparently looking to make the show a showcase for the rich vein of deep souful sounds emananting from Chicago in the era.

Besides Colon and his Ray Charles performance, the show has apparently brought on artists like Raphael Saadiq to play silky-smooth soul star Sam Cooke, and plan on following the well-worn (not to mention profitable) path of shows like "Glee,""American Idol" and "the Voice," which have used a popular TV show as a powerful tool for driving remarkable music sales.

"One of the things we learned from 'Glee' is that if you don't make the music available immediately the consumer gets frustrated - or looks for it for free," said Geoff Bywater, Senior VP of Music for Twentieth Television.

"Once the show gains traction, we'll be looking at a 'Playboy Cub' soundtrack. That will be down the road," he said.

The show will reportedly also be casting singers as Roy Orbison, James Brown and Frank Sinatra.

Wonder if they can figure out a way to use "America's Got Talent" winner Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. for the role?

"The Playboy Club" premieres Monday, September 19th at 10 p.m. EST.
