Jared Leto Confirmed as New Joker in 'Suicide Squad'
by Andy NeuenschwanderLadies and gentlemen, meet your new psychopathic clown.
Oscar winner Jared Leto has been confirmed for his role in Warner Bros. and DC Comics' upcoming movie "Suicide Squad," in which Leto will play the role of The Joker.
Leto was rumored to be joining the cast, along with Margot Robbie as Joker's girlfriend Harley Quinn, Will Smith as assassin Deadshot, and Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg. As of today, all of those cast members have been confirmed in an announcement from WB.
Robbie, Smith and Leto will be accompanied by Jai Courtney, who will play Boomerang, and Cara Delevigne, who will play Enchantress, in the movie about DC Comics villains who act as a special ops squad for the government.
Leto will be the first actor to take on the role of The Joker in a live-action film since Heath Ledger, who famously played the role in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and committed suicide shortly after finishing filming. Naturally, those are big shoes to fill, especially since Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal.
There's certainly a lot of gravitas in the cast, which may also include Oprah Winfrey, Octavia Spencer or Viola Davis once the role of Amanda Waller is filled. The combination of veterans and newcomers should make for an interesting cast in what Warner Bros. is calling "the 'Oceans Eleven' of superhero movies."
