The film is based on a true story about a diving team who get trapped inside one of the world’s unexplored underwater caves.

In an interview with Reuters, Cameron explained that the movie is not about a monster in a cave with a supernatural component as perceived, nor is it a documentary. According to the producer, ‘Sanctum’ is "pure survival drama."

Cameron explained that the movie presents the beauty of nature, but that it can also be terrifying.

"When you deal with the ocean or a cave, it's going to do what its going to do, and it does not care if you're there. You can get swatted like a fly. On the other hand, nature offers us incredible gifts, incredible beauty and incredible insights. It's a give and take," said Cameron.

"It's a labyrinthine environment that continues to evolve, sometimes constricting down to a very claustrophobic space and sometimes opening out to stadium-sized caverns. That variety, along with the unexpected that comes around each corner, is part of what I think propels the movie," he said.

The actors in the "Sanctum" are not well known, but their characters are compelling as they battle paranoia, panic, and raging waters as their equipments and supplies diminish.

Sanctum is directed by Alister Grierson starring Rhys Wakefield, Allison Cratchley and Christopher Baker co-written and produced by James Cameron and Andrew Wight.

In other news, Cameron also told Reuters that the next ‘Avatar’ is underway.

“I'm writing the scripts. We are developing the software and all the nuances to our performance capture system to take it to the next level. And we're developing some new technology that needs to be in place by the end of this year.”

According to Cameron, he will continue with the character that survived in the movie, and there will be new characters and new environment. He promised that the ‘Avatar’ sequel will be a “kick-ass action adventure.”
