'Ironside' and 'Welcome to the Family' Cancelled: Who's Next?
by EGQuite a few new TV series are teetering on the brink of cancellation, and this week two of them slipped over the edge. NBC announced that it's cancelling "Welcome to the Family" and "Ironside." The two shows join "Lucky 7" and "We Are Men" as the third and fourth freshman series to fall victim to poor ratings.
The cancellation of the two shows gives NBC slots for two other shows—the new "Chicago PD" (a spin-off of "Chicago Fire") and the returning "Community"—both of which will begin airing after the New Year. In the meantime, "Welcome to the Family"'s slot will be filled with new episodes of "Parks and Recreation," holiday specials, and special episodes of "The Voice" and "The Sing-Off." The slot vacated by "Ironside" will be filled new episodes of "Dateline" and holiday specials; "Chicago PD" debuts in the slot on Jan. 8.
The cancellation of the two NBC series came as no surprise to ratings-watchers. Attention now turns to other freshman under-performers, including NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show" and "Sean Saves the World," ABC's "Betrayal" and "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland," and Fox's "Dads." "The Goldbergs" (ABC), "Super Fun Night" (ABC), "Trophy Wife" (ABC), and "Hostages" (CBS) are also on shaky ground.
