Iron Throne--'Game of Thrones'-Inspired Beer?
by Shannon KeirnanAudiences at home enjoying “Game of Thrones” can now make the experience feel a little more… authentic… with a frosty “GoT” beer in hand.
Yes, that’s right. They’re making “Game of Thrones” beer now.
Belgian-style Brewery Ommegang, based in Cooperstown, New York, has released Iron Throne, a blonde ale, and plans to release more brews inspired by the show.
Allison Capozza, a spokeswoman for the company, said “HBO approached us last year. The producers of the show are fans of Ommegang beers and they thought that would be a good fit for them for this project.”
The first beer launched just in time for season 3 of the show, and it retails for $8.50 for a 750 ml bottle. You can purchase it at places where you’d expect to find something this unique—Whole Foods, Cost Plus, and Total Wine, for example. Need to find some Iron Throne near you? Check out Ommegang’s website and explore the “Find a Beer” application to discover where you can pick up a glass or a bottle.
To date the company has brewed about 25,000 gallons of Iron Throne. Ommegang says they will release three more varieties of beer over the next few seasons, all based on George R.R. Martin’s novel-to-television series.
Martin himself has signed a two-year development and production deal with HBO and will continue as an executive producer for the show while he works on completing book six of the series, so rest assured the Emmy-award winning series will be around a long time.
So relax, put your feet up, and enjoy season three with an Iron Throne in hand.
