Internet Reacts to Tim Howard's Record-Breaking World Cup Performance with 'Game of Thrones,' 'Lion King' Memes
by Andy NeuenschwanderThe U.S. team may be eliminated from the World Cup, but at least we got something good out of it.
Yesterday, the USMNT took on Belgium in the World Cup knockout round, holding the game scoreless until extra time. That wasn't for a lack of chances for Belgium, though, as the team took plenty of shots on goal.
But the U.S. had Tim Howard.
Howard, who plays with English club Everton outside of the World Cup, set a new record in saves in the USA-Belgium match. With 16 total saves, Howard is now the record holder for most saves in a World Cup match. Howard was named Man of the Match despite the U.S. falling to Belgium 2-1 in extra time.
Then, the Internet responded. One of the first things that happened was on Wikipedia, where a user changed the entry under "U.S. Department of Defence" to Tim Howard. Concurrently, a new meme was born: Things Tim Howard Could Save.
The meme involves placing Howard into photos from movies, TV and moments in history, diving to save what would otherwise be an inevitable disaster. For example, it didn't take long for someone to Photoshop Howard leaping in to stop Ned Stark's execution on "Game of Thrones" or diving to rescue Mufasa from falling into the wildebeest stampede in "The Lion King."
The list goes on, so we'll let you see all the things the Internet thinks that Tim Howard could save below:
