According to Box Office Mojo Tuesday afternoon, Marvel's pioneering crossover that defies even the "blockbuster" tag will almost assuredly surpass a $600-million domestic gross by Tuesday's end. It started today poised at $599,387,534, according to Mojo's tally. Via simple math, that means it need only make $612,466 to put it in exclusive company with only James Cameron's "Avatar" and the original run of "Titanic."
Take also into consideration that "The Avengers" currently decisively owns 28 Box Office Mojo fiscal records, among them:
Biggest Opening Weekend: $207.4 million
Biggest Second Weekend: $103 million
Fastest to $100 Million: 2 days
Fastest to $150 Million: 2 days
Fastest to $200 Million: 3 days
Fastest to $250 Million: 6 days
Fastest to $300 Million: 9 days
Fastest to $350 Million: 10 days
Fastest to $400 Million: 14 days
Fastest to $450 Million: 17 days
Fastest to $500 Million: 23 days
Highest Saturday Gross: $69.5 million
Highest Sunday Gross: $57 million
It's out-grossed the four weekend-headlining releases - "Men In Black 3," "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," "Snow White And The Huntsman" and "Prometheus" - combined, at this point.
Though it will surpass the "Titanic" original-run mark of $600.8 million sometime Wednesday, only a rumored fall re-release might push it past the $658-million adjusted total when factoring in Cameron's 2012 re-release of his Oscar-winning classic to commemorate its 15th anniversary.
