Ice Skates, Broadway and 'Once Upon a Time': Cashing in on 'Frozen'

It’s a no-brainer if you think about it, but Disney should still get credit for coming up with the idea of a “Frozen”-themed ice-skating show. The touring version of “Disney on Ice” featuring characters from the blockbuster movie will hit the road in the fall, and it will be just one prong of the many-pronged marketing attack taking advantage of “Frozen”’s success.

The New York Times reports that the show will be mostly based on “Frozen,” as opposed to previous shows which drew from lots of different Disney properties. This one will include dozens of cast members, truckloads of equipment and an indoor blizzard furnished by 20 snow machines.

The ice show is being promoted as something like a Broadway show on skates, but there will also be a genuine Broadway show based on “Frozen.” A musical stage version of the movie is being developed for a Broadway premier, and both Idina Menzel and Kristin Bell, the voices of the movie’s lead characters, have expressed interest in being involved with the stage show.

And if that’s not enough, part of “Frozen” will also be coming to TV, when the Disney/ABC series “Once Upon a Time” introduces Elsa as a new character in the series’ upcoming fall season.
