'How I Met Your Mother' Season 7, Episode 16 Recap - 'The Drunk Train'
by Andy NeuenschwanderA momentous episode this week after last week's "The Burning Beekeeper" proved to be fun structurally, but not very eventual plot or character-wise.
It starts with Barney and Ted making an amazing discovery: the Drunk Train. It's the last train to Long Island every night, full of drunk people trying to hook up with "anything that moves" before the night ends. That, of course, sounds like heaven to Barney, so the two of them check it out.
After little success and a lot of whiteboard marking from Barney, Ted finally makes the discovery they were looking for: you have to get drunk to have success on the drunk train. Things start looking up then, but the evening takes a turn when Ted makes a discovery about Quinn, the wingwoman that Barney dealt with while being wingman to Ted.
As it turns out, Barney likes Quinn. She was intuitive, challenging and headstrong, and most importantly didn't buy into Barney's crap. Not even Norah could see through Barney's lies, so that's saying something.
But most of the momentous occasions happened to poor Robin, who was taken on quite the rollercoaster ride. She and Kevin go on a trip with Marshall and Lily, and Kevin proposes while they're out. Robin doesn't quite know what to say, because she knows she can't have kids. She opens up to Marshall and Lily, who tell her she needs to tell Kevin.
She does, and he proposes again. But when Robin tells him that she doesn't even want kids, the proposal is rescinded. So either they were getting sick of this character, or Kal Penn has to go back to work at the White House.
This all seemed to be opening things up for the final scene, in which Ted realizes how brutal his recent dates have been and even said "screw The One" to Barney. Ted! How could you?
He returns to find Robin on the roof, crying over having lost Kevin. That's when Ted drops this bomb: "I love you, Robin."
When Ted had his run-in witch Victoria, the subject of Ted and Robin came up and we knew then that it would probably come into play sometime soon. Still, even though that was wayyyyy back at the beginning of this season, it still feels like this came out of nowhere.
What does this mean? Will Barney come into play here? Is Barney's marriage to Robin, or Quinn? We still have another eight or so episodes to go this season, so there's plenty of time for all of this to play out.
