'How I Met Your Mother' Creator Promises Alternate Ending on DVD Set

'How I Met Your Mother' Creator Promises Alternate Ending on DVD Set Here's some good news for "How I Met Your Mother" fans: That controversial ending might not be the only one there is.

Carter Bays, one of the long-running CBS sitcom's creators, took to Twitter about a week after the ending that put fans in an uproar to answer questions. Naturally, he got a lot of questions about the rather sad and, to most fans, disappointing series finale episode.

But Bays defended the decisions they made about the show's ending. "If you didn't like the finale, I guess that happens," he wrote. "We tried something and it didn't connect with you. I hope we're still friends."

Still, Bays had some good news for fans who wished that things had turned out differently for Ted and the gang. "So anyway, here's a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings," Bays wrote. "We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series."

Bays continued his series of tweets: "We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother."

Interesting, no? Let's discuss a bit of what that means...beware, from here on in there are SPOILERS!

The series finale saw Ted finally get together with the Mother, only to lose her to an unnamed illness and later get together with Robin, who had earlier gotten divorced from Barney. This left a lot of fans feeling cheated: After all, we stuck through to watch Ted meet the Mother and were told all along that it wasn't Robin. Technically that was still true, but it felt like a trick. Plus, the Barney/Robin marriage lasted for literally about 20 minutes, so that was disappointing to say the least.

The show was somewhat stuck with their ending, though, as they shot those speeches from the kids back in 2009 so that they wouldn't appear older when the finale finally came around. If they shot different speeches from the kids and from Ted at the time, that could keep the Mother alive and keep Ted and Robin from getting together. However, unless they just had Ted wrap it up through voice-over, it probably wouldn't bring Barney and Robin back together, so that's a bummer.
