'How I Met Your Father' Coming from 'This Is Us' Writers
by EG
Still wishing for a new series based on the How I Met Your Mother premise? Don't give up hope just yet. News broke last week that two writers are working on a spin-off of the CBS sitcom, and this time the project might actually make it to the airwaves.
After HIMYM ended in 2014, creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays immediately followed up with a spin-off pilot called How I Met Your Dad, a similarly themed sitcom that would star indie actress Greta Gerwig. Surprisingly, CBS passed on the pilot, and it went on the shelf without ever getting on the air.
This time around, the proposed series will have a slightly more formal name, How I Met Your Father, and it's being developed independently by 20th Century Fox Television. That means CBS isn't the series' obvious home, and the project is reportedly being shopped around to other networks and streaming platforms.
More significantly, it appears that Thomas and Bays will not have major creative involvement with the project. It's being written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who are currently writing for the hit NBC drama This Is Us. Thomas and Bays will serve as executive producers.
The news might come as a relief to HIMYM fans, given that Thomas and Bays met with much criticism for the way they chose to end the original series.
