'House of Cards' Rockets to Top on Netflix

'House of Cards' Rockets to Top on Netflix After less than two weeks, Netflix already has a huge hit on their hands with their new series “House of Cards.”

The political drama starring Kevin Spacey has already rocketed to being the most-watched program on the site.

What that means, number wise, is a mystery, as Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos says that it’s a difficult to draw a comparison between streaming Netflix and broadcast programming—“apples and oranges.”

He explains that because Netflix doesn’t sell advertising and isn’t carried by cable or satellite providers, he has no one he needs to justify strong numbers for. Suffice to say, really, that the show is doing well—Netflix offers thousands of popular shows to view, so anything that’s hit the top is probably riding pretty easy.

Which is good news, because Netflix has already locked down the series, which also stars Robin Wright, for a second season.

Netflix is also planning to bring back “Arrested Development.” Though FOX cancelled the popular show, it has found its new home on Netflix and will be airing new episodes. Mitch Hurwitz, the creator, says specific numbers don’t really matter to content creators. All they need to know is if “it’s doing poorly, it’s doing ok or it’s doing great.”

“Arrested Development” star Will Arnett says there will be major advantages to working with Netflix… especially that there will no longer be a need to “flatten,” i.e. water down, the plot to appeal to a certain demographic audience.

Five original series in total will premiere this year on Netflix. What else can we expect?

Netflix has teamed up with Dreamworks to develop “Turbo: F.A.S.T.” The show will be a spin-off of the not-yet-released animated “Turbo,” which follows a snail who finds out he has developed serious speed after a freak accident.

“Turbo” is due out in July.
