Hollywood, 'The Daily Show' React to President Obama's Gay Marriage Support
by Andy NeuenschwanderHollywood has recently been a little less supportive of President Obama than it was at the start of his term, citing grievances here and there in the compromises that the administration has made in order to deal with GOP opposition and appeal to the moderate base. But with Vice President Biden making his announcement in support of gay marriage, followed by the president himself announcing his support, Hollywood is being a bit more vocal.
Among the administration's many famous fans is "Smash" star Debra Messing, whose former show "Will & Grace" was name-dropped by Joe Biden in his interview. Biden went so far as to say that the show "probably did more to educate the American public than anything anybody's done so far."
Messing was overjoyed to hear that, saying, "I think it was one of the proudest moments of my life, besidest the birth of my son." She called Biden's statement "incredibly humbling." She did note, though, that she wished they had made their announcements before the vote in North Carolina that passed a gay marriage ban.
Another excited celebrity was, of course, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, who featured the clip of Obama's announcement. The clip was met with wild applause from the audience, and praise (and jokes, of course) from Stewart. However, Stewart killed his own buzz by transitioning to the topic of the vote in North Carolina that passed a strict ban on not only gay marriage, but also civil unions and domestic partnerships.
"How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris noted that divide as well. He offered two tweets this week, one expressing disbelief at North Carolina's vote and the other expressing thanks to the president:
North Carolina passed Amendment One. Unbelievable.

Word is that some influential Hollywood players are starting to show more financial support as well, donating large sums of money to President Obama's campaign where they hadn't before. And with the president having his big fundraiser with George Clooney in Hollywood this week, the timing couldn't be better.
