'Hitman's Bodyguard' Has a Drowsy Thursday Debut

The Hitman's Bodyguard, the action-comedy film starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, nabbed $1.65 million from 2,600 preview screens beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday while Logan Lucky, Steven Soderbergh's latest, took in $525,000.

The R-rated Lionsgate movie could earn as much as $18 million, according to tracking. That should land it easily at No. 1 on a very sleepy August weekend.

Hitman's Bodyguard follows the world's top bodyguard who is assigned a new client: a hitman who must be protected until he can testify at a trial. It's directed by Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3).

This weekend's only other new release is Soderbergh's star-studded Logan Lucky.

The film, which is being release by Bleecker Street, is tracking to debut in the $8 million range. It's Soderbergh's first movie in four years, and his return after his previously announced "retirement."
