'Heroes' Gets a Miniseries Revival from NBC - Will the Original Cast Return?
by Andy NeuenschwanderApparently NBC's "Heroes" has its own superpower: Coming back from the dead.
The network has announced that it will be reviving the canceled sci-fi TV series for a limited run in the near future, giving superheroes another shot in prime time on NBC.
The move makes some sense considering the relative success of other superhero shows: "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is doing well on ABC, while the CW has carved out a nice niche with shows like "Arrow" and a potential spinoff for The Flash, and FOX has the Batman prequel "Gotham" in the works.
"Heroes" is at a distinct disadvantage to those shows, however, in that it lacks name-brand superheroes. One might argue that the show's previous fan base would be excited for new episodes and could bring in good ratings, but one might have forgotten that "Heroes" straight up sucked as it went on.
Though the show had a strong start, the WGA writer's strike disrupted the narrative flow of "Heroes" and led to mistakes that could never be undone. By the end, the show did nothing but disappoint fans with poor character choices and a lack of budget meant the show couldn't make up for bad story with distracting action sequences and special effects.
Of course, a new start could erase the slate and make "Heroes" into the show it always should have been. After all, the subtitle for the upcoming 13-part miniseries is "Reborn."
There's no word as to whether the original cast will return, so it's not yet known if we'll see Sylar, Claire, Nathan, Hiro and the rest of the gang. However, director Tim Kring is set to return, so take that as you will.
"Heroes Reborn" is set to premiere in 2015, and will be preceeded by a short webseries that will introduce new characters and storylines. Stay tuned for more info.
