Sunday Long Watch: Here's Why You Actually Hate Michael Bay
by Andy Neuenschwander"Transformers: Age of Extinction" came out this past weekend, and as is the norm with Michael Bay movies, it made a big heap of money while still being referred to by critics and audiences alike as more or less a piece of crap.
But why is it, exactly, that people hate Michael Bay so much? Many refer to the almost juvenile tendency for him to make his movies into an all-out explosionfest punctuated only by pee jokes and the occasional shot of a hot girl arching her back in an unnatural way, and while that's definitely a factor, there may be more to it for film buffs.
This video from editor, cinematographer and YouTuber Tony Zhou takes a serious, in-depth look at Michael Bay's film style, referred to here as "Bayhem," and deconstructs it in order to explain exactly what's going on and why it's important to film as a whole.
In the video, Zhou explains the function of that staple rotating shot, how Bay manages to make his movies seem big and epic in every scene, and goes on to show us how Bay has overused those techniques to the point where they're overload, making audiences walk out of the theater with a sense that they saw something exciting, but they're not quite sure what it was.
So the next time you want to critique Michael Bay and sound really smart about it, just pull a few quotes from this video.
