Here's the Super Bowl Ad GoDaddy Pulled Due to Controversy
by Andy Neuenschwander
GoDaddy has a history of making commercials deemed "too hot for TV" that occasionally have to be pulled. This time, though, the company has pulled an ad and it has nothing to do with boobs.
The web-domain company previewed their newest Super Bowl ad, which plays off of the trend of using adorable puppies to tug at the heartstrings. In their ad, a cute puppy named Buddy falls out of a truck and makes a long journey home, only to find that his owner has sold him using a website created with GoDaddy's services.
Almost immediately, the online backlash started: animal rights advocates everywhere argued that the commercial promotes backyard breeders who sell dogs online, while other dogs languish at shelters waiting to be adopted.
GoDaddy, to its credit, made a PSA with Danica Patrick about adopting dogs to accompany the commercial. The video was on their YouTube page, but has been set to private.
However, that PSA would not be airing during the Super Bowl. Due to the backlash, GoDaddy has already decided to pull the ad:
"This morning we previewed GoDaddy's Super Bowl spot on a popular talk show, and shortly after a controversy started to swirl about Buddy, our puppy, being sold online," the company said in a statement. "The responses were emotional and direct. Many people urged us not to run the ad… We are pulling the ad from the Super Bowl. You'll still see us in the Big Game this year, and we hope it makes you laugh. Finally, rest assured, Buddy came to us from a reputable and loving breeder in California. He's now part of the GoDaddy family as our Chief Companion Officer and he lives permanently with one of our longtime employees."
The company noted that Buddy has been adopted by a GoDaddy employee, but their statement that Buddy came from a "reputable and loving breeder" isn't likely to calm those who oppose private breeders altogether.
