Here's What the Battle in 'The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies' Will Look Like

Pretty much everything in the first two "The Hobbit" movies has been building to a critical sequence in the third movie: The Battle of the Five Armies.

The original book describes a battle of epic proportions, as the armies of men, elves, dwarves and eagles clash against goblins and wargs. Understandably, it's a considerable undertaking to bring something like that to life on screen.

Thanks to some concept art released by EW, though, we now know what the titular battle in "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" will look like!

The art previews a massive scale for the scene, with the Gate of Erebor towering behind a fracas of trolls, goblins and other creatures. Even though they're still images, they display the chaos of the battle, with bodies flying through the air and armies clashing.

Also included is a sketch of how the armies will meet on the field, which looks almost like what a general would actually draw out in planning an attack...only perhaps a little more colorful.

"There’s a lot of logistics that have to be thought through," director Peter Jackson said of planning the scene. "We have dwarves and men and elves and orcs, all with different cultures, with different weapons, and different shields and patterns and tactics. Before we could loose the first arrow, we had to design the landscape itself and figure out, ‘Okay, if we have 10,000 orcs, how much room are they going to take up? Are they going to fill up the valley or look like a speck?’ Then we could start drawing the arrows on the schematics."

The whole thing looks absolutely epic, and helps explain why "Battle of the Five Armies" ended up costing $745 million to make.
