HBO Releases an Extended First-Look at 'Game of Thrones' Season 4!
by Shannon KeirnanHBO has been teasing us with bits and pieces of what to expect from season 4 of "Game of Thrones" for some time now, but Sunday saw the release of the most exciting preview yet.
In the 15-minute video entitled "Game of Thrones: Ice and Fire: A Foreshadowing," we get our first true look at what to expect from the next season.
Spoilers ahead!
Season 3 left us shaking our head (and sobbing) over the much-talked of Red Wedding. How does that shocking moment lead us into season 4?
"I know how important the Red Wedding is to so many fans of the books," says Peter Dinklage, who plays fan-favorite Tyrion Lannister. "But we pick up the pieces and top it in many ways."
One of these ways may be with Tyrion himself. This is described as "the most dangerous season for Tyrion. It seems like every episode, he's in jeopardy of getting his head removed from his shoulders."
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), another "Game of Thrones" favorite, will also be facing major challenges this season, despite her epic seizure of power and freedom in season three.
As Daenerys reigns in a keep in Essos, Clarke warns us, "The cities that Dany previously liberated are beginning to revolt. It's all well and good to go in and cut the tie and seemingly break people free, but if you don't leave them with any kind of structure, or a commander who shares the same morals and views as the person who liberated them, it's a free-for-all."
Complicating her rule? Those dragons everyone hopes to see more of!
"They're outgrowing the restrictions she's placing on them," Clarke admits. "She's always feared it... It's a symbol of her losing control of herself and what she's doing."
Understandably. With only a few glimpses in the video of what the dragons have become (with an especially alarming view at the very very end of the preview), we can still see that the dragons have accomplished quite a bit of growth since we last saw them.
With the introduction of new characters (such as Oberyn), interviews with the show's characters, and great hints at what's to come (Royal Wedding, anyone?), this preview is a must-see for any "Game of Thrones" fan.
Showrunner David Benioff promises fans, "Some of the most shocking and mind-blowing scenes of the series come at the end of this coming season."
The show premieres April 6th. We'll be there. Will you?
