HBO is Getting Out of the Soft-Core Erotica Business

HBO was one of the early homes for soft-core erotica on cable TV with its Real Sex, Taxicab Confessions and other unabashedly erotic programming. Now the network apparently wants to be known for the violent sexuality of a show like Game of Thrones instead, so it's quietly removing its legacy erotic programming from its online streaming platform. HBO is done giving subscribers late night thrills. Earlier this summer, HBO quietly removed its many “late night” options, including erotic movies and TV shows and documentary series like Taxicab Confessions and Real Sex. Gone are the days of Cathouse’s Nevada brothel, porn star Katie Morgan, and soft-core films; instead, our Decider After Dark collection will have to suffice.
These sexy titles first debuted on HBO in the early 1990s, when the network was still developing into a TV powerhouse.
Before HBO really put their name on the map with shows like The Sopranos and Oz, these late night options generated a lot of buzz, especially among men who didn’t want to pay for pay-per-view porn or adult cable channels. In the pre-internet era, Real Sex, Taxicab Confessions, and Cathouse provided viewers easy access to sexy content without all of the fees and questions.
The majority of HBO’s after-hours programming ended in the 2000s, but the network continued to run episodes on TV, and the entire catalog was available on HBO Go under the “Late Night” tab. But now, that tab has been deleted.
