DC Comics Working on a 'Hawkman' Movie, Says It's Like 'Indiana Jones' Meets 'The Da Vinci Code' and 'Ghost'

I'm not one to complain about the slew of superhero movies that have hit theaters in the past decade. Superheroes are awesome. Superhero movies are, for the most part, awesome. There comes a point, though, when studios are going to really be reaching to make movies about famous superhero characters, and that time might be now.

Rumors are circulating the Web today that a "Hawkman" movie is currently in development. Yes, "Hawkman." As in, that shirtless DC superhero that wears the wings and the helmet with the beak on it. There has been talk of a "Justice League" movie being in the works, and Hawkman is part of said league...so it's likely that the movie is being developed as an intro to that project.

However, the choice for a Hawkman movie is questionable. The main members of the Justice League include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and Hawkman. Most of those heroes are recognizable to the general public, but the last two...not so much. Is a Hawkman movie really neccessary? If we look at what Marvel is doing in preparing for "The Avengers," the answer is probably no. After all, Jeremy Renner's archer Hawkeye is in the Avengers, and appeared in "Thor," but will likely not get his own solo movie before "The Avengers" (although it's possible).

Here's the really strange part: the log-line for "Hawkman" describes it as a mix between "Indiana Jones," "The Da Vinci Code," and "Ghost." That seems to imply that the movie will go for the original Hawkman origin story, which has an Indiana Jones-type architect by the name of Carter Hall finding a special material that allows him to become Hawkman. The newer origin involves aliens and interstellar police forces, and that's already being done with "Green Lantern."

It could be a very interesting story if they go the "Indiana Jones" route with this character. After all, part of the appeal of "Iron Man" is that Tony Stark is a regular dude (a very smart, rich regular dude) who makes himself into a hero. "Hawkman" could have the same tone.

I'm still not sure how "Ghost" is going to fit into this. Is there pottery involved?
