Harvey Weinstein Arrested for Sexual Assault

Harvey Weinstein, who once headed a production company that produced such acclaimed movies as Shakespeare in Love, was arrested in NYC on Thursday on multiple charges of sexual assault. The arrest comes after months of investigation into numerous claims of sexual misconduct on Weinstein's part.

Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein surrendered to authorities Friday morning at a police precinct in New York, where he is expected to be arrested and charged with allegedly raping a woman and forcing another to perform oral sex, multiple outlets report.

The 66-year-old former head of Miramax and The Weinstein Company is expected to face charges of first-degree rape and third-degree rape in one case, and with first-degree criminal sex act in another, The New York Times, CNN and ABC report.

He is expected to be charged with criminal sex act in the first-degree in connection with an alleged 2004 sexual assault on aspiring actress Lucia Evans, the outlets report.

I, and so many of Harvey Weinstein’s survivors, had given up hope that our rapist would be held accountable by law. Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong. Today we are one step closer to justice. We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorized by his vast network of complicity. I stand with my fellow survivors. May his arrest give hope to all victims and survivors everywhere that are telling their truths.

The arrest of the fallen movie executive comes after a 7-month investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him – and just weeks after a special grand jury was convened to hear the evidence against him, the New York Daily News reports.

It’s unclear if Weinstein will face additional charges in connection with other allegations of sexual misconduct.

At the NYPD’s First Precinct, he was expected to be fingerprinted and have his mug shot taken, according to NBC News.
