'Harry Potter' Box Office Actuals Even Higher Than Expected

As if the news could possibly get any better for Warner Bros., it turns out that the Monday actuals for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" were even better than the Sunday estimates said. Those estimates already had "Harry Potter 7-2" breaking box office records, but apparently it broke them even more.

While Sunday's tracking estimated a domestic haul of $168.6 million, the actual number turned out to be $169.2 million. Of course, an extra $800,000 when you're talking about nearly $170 million isn't much, but it increases the lead of the record-setting "Harry Potter" finale.

The movie broke records around the world as well, setting an all-time global opening best of $481.5 million. A massive number to be sure, and one that will often take even big-name movies a few weeks to reach.

Here's another interesting number: international audiences preferred to see the movie in 3D, as 60% of moviegoers opted for the 3D experience. By contrast, only 43% of ticket sales in America were due to 3D tickets. Have Americans tired of 3D more quickly than the rest of the world? Or are we just more inclined to save a few bucks when possible? My guess is that it's not the latter.

These sales don't even include numbers from China, as the movie doesn't open there until August 4th. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" looks primed to end up as the #1 grossing movie of all time if this continues.
