What Happens When Childish Gambino Meets Beck?
by Sean ComerIt's quite the day to be Beck.
On the same day the imaginative genre-bending alternative singer-songwriter's "I Just Started Hating Some People Today" collaboration with Jack White debuted, the talented Mr. Childish Gambino (of course, Donald Glover of "Community" fame) dropped his "Silk Pillow" pairing with Beck on his personal website.
Beck's fingerprints are all over the mid-temp tune, but like any good collaboration, his moments merely accent the strokes Glover lays down. Not only did Beck co-produce it, but those are his choral background vocals and other vocal effects coloring Gambino's flow. Those are also his dragging-tempo rhymes over the first few minute or so after the song's opening measures.
As ever, Glover's true to a Greendale state of mind: understated, esoteric and dare I say, maybe a little smarter than the average MC. He lays out obscure pop homages like "Rio de Janeiro/these bitches lookin' like Xuxa" the way lesser rappers pimp clothing lines and fling their bling in haters' mugs.
According to Paste, the track is slated to appear on Gambino's as-yet untitled and undated future mixtape.
