'Guy With Kids' Season 1, Episode 3: 'Marny Wants a Girl' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanIn Marny and Gary’s apartment, they’re playing Chutes and Ladders to see who has to attend a much-dreaded roller-skating birthday party. They explain to everyone else that this is how they generally figure things out. The twins come in, having broken the blinds, and exasperating Marny. She tells Emily she is so lucky to have a girl.
“The closest my boys come to complimenting me is punching me in the butt.”
Gary realizes what is happening, and that Marny will now put on one of his dress shirts and attempt to seduce him so they can have a girl. The guys tell him to resist her, but he doesn’t think he can.
At Chris’ place, Nick accidentally uses Sheila’s breast milk on his cereal. He is completely disgusted and begs Chris not to tell perfect Sheila.
Emily isn’t looking forward to Sheila’s CPR training session either. Sheila makes her feel like a bad parent, and it doesn’t help when they find out that their daughter Violet is stealing again.
Back at Gary’s, Marny is indeed trying to seduce him, despite Gary having sent all his dress shirts to the cleaner, she finds an old one the boys use as a smock. As she’s attacking him, Nick tries to sneak the picture back into the apartment, but gets caught. Gary makes him stay.
At CPR class, Sheila is being perfect as usual, and making Emily feel inadequate. She suggests turning it into a competition.
Chris hands Marny the baby girl dummy, knowing how she wants to have a girl. Marny is shocked that everyone is involved in this personal knowledge, and storms off. Emily gets competitive during baby resuscitation but can’t keep up with Sheila, and Chris doesn’t help by pointedly drinking milk during Nick’s turn, distracting him.
Gary follows Marny home and they fight, finally laying out the pros and cons of having another baby. They decide the only real way to make a decision is to play a board game for it—it also turns out the reason their son is named Yoda and not after Marny’s father is because she lost a game. They hear a loud bang in the boys’ room, and Gary mentions how much he loves them. Marny explains that he has the boys—if they were all girls, wouldn’t he be trying for a boy? He admits that he would, and agrees that they should try to have a girl.
As they’re trying to have some intimate time in the bedroom, however, it keeps getting interrupted by the boys hammering on door.
Emily is horrified to find that Violet stole Sheila’s keys during the CPR gathering, and doesn’t want to have to return them and look like a bad mother, but Nick thinks it is the right thing to do. Sheila is surprisingly calm about it—she used to steal as a child as well. Emily makes Nick her he drank the milk. She is horrified and nauseated, and Nick is thrilled to see the effect.
“I’m just trying to come clean about the time I was nourished by your rich mammarian nectar.”
Again Marny and Gary are trying to have alone time, but it continues to be interrupted. They enlist Nick and Chris to watch the kids so they can try. Later, Marny takes a pregnancy test, and is completely relieved to find that it is negative—she blames her decision to have another baby on Crazy Marny and the accompanying hormones, and Gary is off the hook.
