Great Scott! Mattel Announces Release of 'Back to the Future' Hoverboards
by Andy NeuenschwanderIt will probably be a long while until we have mass-produced flying cars, holographic billboards, or time machines that run on a small cold fusion machine. But at least this year we're one step closer to hoverboards!
Mattel announced that by the end of this year fans will be able to purchase an accurate, full-size replica of the hoverboard that Marty McFly uses in "Back to the Future Part II." The hoverboards will be made to look exactly like the one in the movie, down to the last detail: it even has the hole in the front where Marty pulled out the handlebar.
Mattel claims that while the hoverboard doesn't hover like it does in the movie, it "glides over most surfaces." As you might guess, it doesn't work on water (unless you got POW-uh!).
So we're still a ways away from a board that can float off the ground, support the weight of a human being, and remain stable. That's going to be a while. It's unclear exactly how these Mattel board "glide," but these are supposedly a "high-cost" item for Mattel. In fact, the company is doing a pre-order sale in March, and will go into production only if a certain number of orders is met. The fact that the item costs that much to make would indicate that there's something cool going on technologically, and it's not just a board with very smooth wheels on it.
If you choose to order, you'll get your Mattel hoverboard just in time for Christmas, so you can put on your auto-lacing Nike shoes, grab a futuristic bottle of Pepsi, crank "Power of Love" and cruise through your town.
