Grammys 2016: Glitches and Low Ratings
by EG
The 2016 Grammy Awards telecast had plenty of buzz going for it. Taylor Swift was able to take a jab at Kanye West during an acceptance speech, and the cast of Hamilton brought a little bit of class to the show. But it was the negatives surrounding the broadcast that were making headlines on the day after.
The hottest topic of conversation was Adele's performance of "All I Ask," a ballad from her latest album. Some minor audio mishaps involving an errant microphone inside a piano and technical problems with audio feeds caused the singer's vocal level to falter throughout the song, and perhaps unnerved by the problems, Adele's aim at some of the song's notes was a bit off the mark.
She could perhaps take some comfort in knowing that comparatively few people were watching. Overnight ratings showed that the broadcast drew a total viewership of just short of 25 million and earned a 7.7 rating in the 18-49 age demographic. Those numbers are nothing to scoff at, but the 18-49 rating is the lowest for any Grammy telecast since 2009, and it's down 1.4 percent from last year's show.
CBS also tried to use the Grammy broadcast to showcase its CBS All Access streaming service by offering a free one-week trial of subscription service this week. Unfortunately, many viewers reported having trouble getting the service to work during the broadcast and complained about missing part of the show.
