Golden Globes Love 'La La Land,' Provoke Trump Tweets

The musical romance La La Land continued to reap major love from the film industry, as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave the film seven of its Gold Globe Awards on Sunday. Meanwhile, Meryl Streep's fiery speech on the Golden Globe stage inspired Donald Trump to go off on an early-morning Twitter tirade.
La La Land's seven wins established a new Gold Globes record. The movie won all the major film awards, including best picture, best director, lead acting awards for both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, best screenplay, best original score and best original song. It was unstoppable, winning in every category in which it was nominated.
The results are likely to be in contrast to next month's Academy Awards, where La La Land is less likely to dominate. The Golden Globes historically mirror mainstream popularity more closely than the Oscars, which tend to honor consensus critically acclaimed movies that often resonate less significantly with the movie-going public.
Nearly outshadowing La La Land's big night was a speech by actress Meryl Streep in acceptance of an achievement award. Streep's speech was explicitly critical of Donald Trump, in particular the moment during the presidential campaign when Trump mocked a disabled reporter at a rally. Trump responded to Streep's speech with a series of tweets in which he called her a "Hillary flunky" and "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood."
