'Godzilla' Reboot Outed At San Diego Comic-Con

Oh, boy.

I'll cop right up front to envy anybody not old enough to remember 1998's reigning very-good-reason why remaking "Godzilla" should probably never be attempted again. Yet, here we are.

It was enough that acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro had arrived at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con to unveil a first glimpse at his own monsters-versus-aliens epic, "Pacific Rim." But as E! News reports, the first looks into the production of del Toro's next would-be opus concluded with an extra-special look at director Gareth Edwards' pass at resurrecting the King of All Monsters.

Edwards' project is actually still listed on IMDB.com as "in development" - not even yet in the serious production stages.

"There's nothing sci-fi, it's very grounded and realistic," Edwards said of the few seconds of footage that featured Godzilla himself emerging from smoky ruins. "I've never worked this long and this hard on something that lasted just a few seconds since, since I lost my virginity."

Hm. A Godzilla fan that toiled that hard for his first lay? Well, if you're going to hand your legendary franchise over to a fanboy, hand it over to one who wears the stereotype with pride.

Still, it's a hard row to hoe. What Japan's Toho Studios unleashed in 1954 and spent decades elevating to global iconic status, one horrendous 1998 Roland Emmerich-directed remake starring Matthew Broderick turned into a cautionary tale of every reason a remake should only be done by somebody who understands the source material.

Behold, a couple of treats below. First, there's the simple (yet, still oddly cool) poster heralding the coming remake. But for those who need a much more specific history lesson, I've once more turned to the good folks at ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com. Specifically, The Nostalgia Critic (Doug Walker) ripping Emmerich's festering pile of lizard s**t a few well-earned new ones.
