'Glee' Star Melissa Benoist Reportedly Cast as Supergirl

"Glee" star Melissa Benoist has just landed a super role.
CBS has reportedly cast the young actress as Supergirl in the upcoming TV series based on the DC Comics character, which is currently in development with a series commitment, but no order yet.
In comics, Supergirl is often known as Kara Zor-El, a cousin to Superman who also hails from the now-destroyed planet Krypton. The character originally debuted in comics back in 1959 as part of the ongoing Superman series, but has gone on to star in her own publication.
This marks yet another TV series in a growing, cross-network trend of DC Comics properties hitting the small screen: "Gotham" on Fox is set in Batman's Gotham City, while The CW has "Arrow" and "The Flash" with a potential spin-off featuring The Atom.
As for Benoist, this is yet another win in a breakout year. She made a splash as one of the new additions to the cast of "Glee" a couple of seasons back, and recently appeared in the Oscar-nominated "Whiplash" along with Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons.
Though this will be the first time an entire TV show has been devoted to the character, it won't be the first time Supergirl has appeared on screen: Helen Slater played the character in a 1984 feature film, and more recently Laura Vandevoort played Kara (minus the Supergirl costume) in The CW's "Smallville."
The hour-long drama has yet to get a full series order from CBS, though it does have a series commitment. With the failure of the "Wonder Woman" TV show, "Supergirl" could end up being the first major network show to center on a female DC Comics superhero.
