'Glee' Star Charice Pempengco's Father's Killer Confesses, Turns Himself In

As we reported Tuesday, Charice Pempengco, who plays Sunshine Corazon on "Glee," found out this week that her father Ricky Pempengco had been stabbed to death during a street altercation in the Philippines.

Authorities had issued a nationwide manhunt and were searching for suspected murderer Angel Capili Jr.

E! reported today the Capili had turned himself in to authorities and confessed his crime.

"I had really planned to surrender because what I did was wrong," Capili told reporters outside of jail.

"I am seeking forgiveness from the family left behind by Mr. Pempengco...I am prepared to suffer whatever is the judgment," said Capili.

While that sounds like the heartfelt confession of a penitent man, apparently what he was confessing to was killing Ricky Pempengco in self-defense after Pempengco attacked him first.

According to Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, "he was claiming that he was already backing away but then [the victim] continued to attack him so he got a screwdriver and he stabbed Mr. Pempengco. We will compare the account of witnesses with the account of the suspect."

Charice Pempengco had been estranged from her father, whom she told Oprah in 2008 (see the segment below) had once threatened to shoot her mother with a shotgun, since she was a child.

Upon learning of her father's death yesterday, Charice released a statement saying:

"Last night, I was with somebody that looked like my dad. I didn't know that my dad was trying to make his presence felt. I just want you to know that we had a really great relationship before all the trouble started. My mother didn't know that when I was young, my father told me that he wanted me to be a soldier because I'm a fearless woman. I loved him, and I will still love him. He's still my dad after all."
