'Glee' May Pay Whitney Houston Tribute Tuesday
by Sean ComerThe timing is simultaneously spooky, poignant and yet . . . perfect.
Six-time Grammy-winner Whitney Houston was found dead at age 48 Saturday afternoon at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel by a bodyguard - mere days before the hit FOX musical dramedy "Glee" was to honor a classic Houston performance in its Valentine's Day episode. Producers are now considering a special tribute in light of her passing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The episode is titled "Heart" and features Mercedes (Amber Riley) letting "I Will Always Love You" bleed out her feelings as she faces a choice between saving all her love for Sam (Chord Overstreet) or Shane (LaMarcus Tinker) on this most romantically cynical day on the calendar. Though originally recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973, Houston's stirring rendition for the 1992 soundtrack to her major motion picture debut "The Bodyguard" was so powerful, it's become more identifiable as "Houston's" song than Parton's.
It did, after all, spend 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, become far more highly regarded than Houston's Razzie-nominated acting in "The Bodyguard," and won Houston Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
A 20th Century Fox Television claimed Saturday that the episode had already been completed and delivered for airing this past Friday. THR speculated that adding something as simple as a title card before or after the episode would be an easy addition before Tuesday.
Check out a full-length audio clip of Riley's rendition here. Call it exaggeration, but her runs and timbre sometimes mirror Houston's so closely, it's actually chilling.
Chilling - but maybe with the makings of something very, very unexpectedly special.
