'Glee' & 'American Horror Story' Creators Set Female-Driven Comedy-Horror Anthology Show at Fox
by Andy NeuenschwanderIf you love "Glee" and "American Horror Story" and wish you could somehow combine the two, Ryan Murphy has a new show for you!
Murphy, along with "Glee" co-creator Brad Falchuk, have struck a deal with Fox to bring them an all-new comedy-horror series called "Scream Queens," set to premiere sometime next year.
It would seem that Murphy enjoys the changeable nature of "American Horror Story," as "Scream Queens" will also be an anthology show and will use a different setting and different characters every season.
Murphy noted that casting has already begun for the series, and that it will be a female-driven show with each season featuring two female leads...a nice counterbalance to the male-driven anthology of "True Detective."
"I knew I wanted to work with Brad and Ian again on something comedic," Murphy said, "and we are having a blast writing Scream Queens. We hope to create a whole new genre — comedy-horror — and the idea is for every season to revolve around two female leads. We’ve already begun a nationwide search for those women, as well as 10 other supporting roles, and we’re very grateful to [Fox TV Group chairmen and CEOs] Dana [Walden] and Gary [Newman] for their enthusiastic support."
We're not so sure that comedy-horror is a "whole new genre" as Murphy says (hello, did he even see "Cabin in the Woods?"), but more female-driven network shows are always welcome, and comedy-horror seems a good fit for today's audiences.
The show will go straight to series for Fox with a 15-episode order (each episode being one hour long) and will aim to premiere in the 2015-2016 season.
