What Will George Lucas Do With His Disney Billions?
by Shannon KeirnanGeorge Lucas plans on doing good with the over $4 billion he received after selling LucasFilms to Walt Disney Studios. The brain behind the epic “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises is planning to donate most of that money to charities.
In a statement Lucas made last Wednesday, he said, “For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”
Lucas has indeed been generous in the past. Back in 2010, he wrote, in a Giving Pledge:
“I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future –- and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.”
So where will this hefty sum be headed? No word quite yet. Speculation is that Edutopia, a foundation that increases the incorporation of innovative coursework into schools, will probably be high on the list. Lucas currently serves as chairman.
Make-A-Wish Foundation and Stand Up to Cancer have also been recipients of Lucas’ donations in the past. The Lucas Educational Foundation has also donated millions to educational institutions.
Slow clap for you, George Lucas. What's another few billion, right?
