George Clooney Proposed with a 7 Carat Diamond Ring Worth More Than Your House

Prepare to feel inadequate.

People magazine has the first look at Amal Alamuddin's engagement ring, given to her by George Clooney...and it's probably worth more than your house.

The ring that the "Gravity" star got for his lawyer fiancée features a 7-carat emerald cut diamond on a platinum setting. Jewlers estimate that the ring is worth about $750,000.

For those keeping track, that's almost three times more than the average cost of a house in the United States (which is around $275k-$300k). You could send half the Duggar family to college with that kind of money. And that's saying something, because last time I counted, there are a lot of Duggars.

According to People, Clooney helped custom-design the ring, which looks to have two baguette side diamonds in addition to the massive center stone. Of course, the diamond is said to have been ethically mined, which is no surprise considering both Clooney's and Alamuddin's backgrounds in human rights.

To be fair to Clooney, though this ring is an expensive one (it outprices the ring Prince William gave to Kate Middleton by a factor of about seven), it's not even close to some of the most expensive celebrity engagement rings. For comparison, Jay-Z gave Beyoncé an 18-carat Lorraine Schwartz ring with an estimated cost of $5 million. That's one of the most expensive rings in celebrity history, second perhaps only to Elizabeth Taylor's ring from Richard Burton, which was a 33-plus-carat diamond valued at over $8 million.

Still, though. That's one heck of a ring.
