UPDATE: Gary Oldman Apologizes for Anti-Semitic Comments, Defending Mel Gibson
by Andy NeuenschwanderUPDATE: Gary Oldman, who told us that we are all hypocrites who should "take a fucking joke," has already made a 180 on his convictions.
Oldman has issued an apology for his anti-semitic remarks, in an official statement that almost makes him sound even more anti-semitic. So, hilarious stuff all around.
Here's the full apology:
"Dear Gentlemen of the ADL:
I am deeply remorseful that comments I recently made in the Playboy Interview were offensive to many Jewish people. Upon reading my comments in print—I see how insensitive they may be, and how they may indeed contribute to the furtherance of a false stereotype. Anything that contributes to this stereotype is unacceptable, including my own words on the matter. If, during the interview, I had been asked to elaborate on this point I would have pointed out that I had just finished reading Neal Gabler’s superb book about the Jews and Hollywood, An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews invented Hollywood. The fact is that our business, and my own career specifically, owes an enormous debt to that contribution.
I hope you will know that this apology is heartfelt, genuine, and that I have an enormous personal affinity for the Jewish people in general, and those specifically in my life. The Jewish People, persecuted thorough the ages, are the first to hear God’s voice, and surely are the chosen people.
I would like to sign off with “Shalom Aleichem”—but under the circumstances, perhaps today I lose the right to use that phrase, so I will wish you all peace–Gary Oldman."

Careful there, Commissioner Gordon.
Actor Gary Oldman is in hot water after some concerning quotes from a recent "Playboy" interview came to light. In the interview, Oldman noted that Hollywood is "run by Jews" and jumped to the defense of people like Alec Baldwin and even Mel Gibson, who were publicly chastised for using homophobic and racial slurs in public.
"Mel Gibson is in a town that’s run by Jews, and he said the wrong thing because he’s actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him," Oldman said, perhaps forgetting the fact that Gibson said "Fucking Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" during his DUI arrest and told Oksana Grigorieva that she would be "raped by a pack of n*ggers." Oh, and he also used the term "wetback," which is always charming.
Even without defending Gibson, Oldman made the mistake of perpetuating the stereotype that Jews run Hollywood. The Anti-Defamation League has been working to dispel these sorts of stereotypes, and said in a statement that Oldman "should know better than to repeat tired anti-Semitic tropes about Jewish control of Hollywood."
"Mel Gibson’s ostracization in Hollywood was not a matter of being ‘politically incorrect,’ as Mr. Oldman suggests, but of paying the consequences for outing himself as a bigot and a hater," said ADL director Abraham Foxman. "It is disturbing that Mr. Oldman appears to have bought into Mr. Gibson’s warped and prejudiced world view."
Oldman is a British-born actor who is most recently famous for his role as Jim Gordon in "The Dark Knight" series of movies, and was taking the interview to promote the upcoming "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."
What is it, exactly, about "Playboy" interviews that makes stars say such poorly thought-out things? John Mayer famously made headlines for calling his penis a "white supremecist" and telling a story about how he tried to "out-gay" Perez Hilton during a New Year's party in an interview with the men's magazine. Back in 2004, Colin Farrell said that "heroin is fine in moderation."
