'Game of Thrones' Won Over Critics But Can It Win a Golden Globe?
by EG
HBO's Game of Thrones took home a significant award this week when it won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Drama Series. The series also pulled in a nomination this week for the same award from the Golden Globes, an awards organization that's traditionally much more about popular success than critical praise. Can GoT manage to win over both critics and Globes voters in the same year?
To pull off the Golden Globes win, GoT will have to overcome some very high-profile competition. HBO's own Westworld also got a nomination in the category, as did Netflix's Stranger Things. Both of those series, despite being newcomers, have been the subject of major buzz this year, an advantage that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association typically rewards when it hands out Golden Globes.
Also nominated are NBC's This Is Us, which has also been highly visible this year, and Netflix's The Crown.
GoT hasn't had great luck with the Globes in the past. The series was nominated for Best Drama in 2012, 2015 and 2016, but it has never won. Peter Dinklage, who took home the Best Supporting Actor award in 2012, is the sole owner of a GoT-related Golden Globe. Lena Headey is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category this year.
The series has been much more productive at the Emmy Awards, having taken home 38 of those statuettes over the years.
