'Game of Thrones' TV Show Is Going to Start Spoiling the Books
by Andy Neuenschwander
The tables are about to turn on "Game of Thrones" book readers.
Up to this point, those who read the George R.R. Martin novels have been ahead of those who only watch the TV show, story-wise. Since the show is based on the books, it has been drawing from them and only deviating slightly in order to retain accuracy.
However, there's a problem: Martin has not finished the seventh book in the series, and doesn't look to be close to doing so anytime soon. Meanwhile, the show continues to chug along at a comparatively quick pace.
As a result, the show will soon pass the books in some storylines, and will in essence start spoiling the books.
Series EPs David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have confirmed this, as they have been working with Martin to incorporate his vision for the unreleased seventh book into the show. "Luckily, we've been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading," said Benioff. "I kind of wish that there were some things we didn't have to spoil, but we're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on... and that's what we're going to do."
This might not apply to all storylines in the show, as some of them are more or less in the right place. However, storylines like Bran Stark's are way ahead of the others currently, with no more published source material available to work off of.
Thus, book readers might soon have to make a choice: watch the show and have the books spoiled, or attempt to avoid the show altogether until Martin finishes his next installment? Given the popularity of the show, the latter might require one to become a hermit and avoid the Internet at all costs too, so we're guessing there are going to be a lot of upset book readers either way.
