'Game of Thrones' Renewed for Two More Seasons
by Andy NeuenschwanderThis just in from the We Saw It Coming newsdesk: "Game of Thrones" has been renewed!
In fact, HBO was so happy with the season four premiere of the show that it renewed the fantasy epic for two more season, setting it up to run through season six and into the year 2016, for now.
Given the popularity of the show, there was no doubt that HBO would be giving "Thrones" a renewal; but with the ratings from Sunday in, the network had to be especially happy. The show averaged 6.6 million viewers in its premiere airings, adding about another 2 million in repeats. That doesn't even add in views through HBO Go, which crashed the night of the premiere due to the heavy workload.
Those ratings mean that the season four premiere was the most-watched episode of an HBO series since the series finale of "The Sopranos," which brought in a whopping 11.9 million viewers back in 2007.
"'Game of Thrones' is a phenomenon like no other," said HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo. "David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."
So do we! The season four premiere was lacking in any major events, but still provided plenty of excitement, plenty of gore, and even a few laughs, thanks to The Hound. Of course, with every new season comes the opportunity for George R.R. Martin to kill off one of your favorite characters, so there's that.
