'Game of Thrones' Makes Emmy History

Game of Thrones is now the winningest primetime scripted TV series in Emmy history. HBO's monster hit took home 12 new Emmy Awards after Sunday's ceremony, bringing the series' total wins to 38, the most ever recorded for a scripted series. This year's win total was also a tie for GoT's most wins in a single year, a record the series set for itself last year.

GoT moved past Frasier, which won 37 Emmys during its run on NBC, to take the all-time title. GoT was in an excellent position going into the ceremony on Sunday, given that its 24 nominations were also a record-setter. GoT won three Emmys at Sunday's ceremony, including Best Drama and Best Writing and Directing in the drama category. The series had already won nine awards at the Creative Arts ceremony, which was held earlier.

GoT still lags behind the series that's won the most Emmys overall. That's Saturday Night Live, which has won 45 Emmys during its 41-season run. GoT still has two seasons left to win Emmys, though, and if the past is any indication, GoT will overtake SNL next year to become the most-awarded series of all time.
