Yidio Question of the Day: Gaga vs. Britney? Which Pop Diva Reigns Supreme?

Yidio Question of the Day: Gaga vs. Britney? Which Pop Diva Reigns Supreme? Is Britney Spears’ riding the 6-inch spike platforms of Lady Gaga (…or did Spears actually come before Lady Gaga and her egg, anyway)?

The race toward the top diva spot is getting heated. Following Lady Gaga’s newest single release (on Wednesday, right on the runway of a Paris fashion show), Spears’ newest single “Till the World Ends” was “accidentally” released early to Perez Hilton on Thursday.

Like the blonde-haired boxers in Spears’ “Hold It Against Me" video, the two are set to duke it out. Which brings us straight into the middle of the ring, and the Yidio Question of the DayBritney Spears vs. Lady Gaga, which pop diva reigns supreme?

Britney Spears

Lady Gaga can sing like Madonna, but Britney’s lips have actually been locked on the breathless mouth of our glorious pop idol.  That’s almost as good as holy water, right?

“Hold it Against Me” will be Britney’s first album release since 2008. The video has gone over well, but the diva’s use of product placement has been noted as a little awkward. In one shot, Spears stops dancing to sit at a computer and look at an online dating site. And then back to dancing, of course. At least she can use the $500,000 she received to buy some dignity.

Product placements are fairly normal in videos, but like Katy Perry reflected of the situation, you just have to be creative about it. In fact, the practice is as old as pointy-cone bras. Madonna’s controversial hit “Like A Prayer” was originally scheduled to be released in a Pepsi commercial. She received $5 million for the contract, but the video was pulled.

In general, Britney’s new work is a-ok to swallow, albeit a little sugary. Fans appreciate the hot tracks (Perez calls it “Ear Porn”) and the videos focuses on what fans like, male backup dancers and soft close up shots of Brit’s face.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is proving she can do more than just dance.

In the past two years, she has sold over 10 million albums while launching a pop cultural revolution. And technically, she’s only had one full-length album and an 8-track EP.

“Born This Way” is being praised for its lyrics: noting it’s Vogue-like bridge, it still receives high marks for originality with outspoken lines like “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen” and of course, “I’m beautiful in my way, ‘cause God makes no mistakes.”

In a dance off, the song (with several instrumental transitions) is slightly rougher than Spears’ use of a pure club style track. But it may hit the spot for those looking for something more soulful than Brit’s lyrics, “'Cuz you feel like paradise, and I need a vacation tonight.” Forget “Toxic,” Gaga’s chorus is contagious and the meaning behind the lyrics (an advocacy for gay rights) is entertaining and educating at the same time.

Judgment:

Gaga wins for letting out the crazy on stage, and for saying it’s okay - be yourself. Shave your hair if you want. Smash car windows – whatever. Just do it and be fun and graceful along the way.

After Britney’s very public melt down, the public would welcome her (and her crazy) with arms wide open.  Lady Gaga shares beauty and pain. People can empathize with both.

Life is not always about sexin’ at clubs. Britney’s tracks (especially if you are going to throw cheesy products in our face) can do better with the lyrics. Britney, please just let your hair down – or better yet, ditch the extensions for a cute, edgy bob. We know you’ve got the guts.
