Friday Box Office for Aug. 2: '2 Guns' Blazes into First Place
by EGIt's not much of a surprise, but the Denzel Washington-led crime pic "2 Guns" beat out both the other new wide release, "The Smurfs 2," and last week's top movie, "The Wolverine," to take first place at Friday's box office by generating $10 million in ticket sales. "2 Guns" looks set to come close to meeting predictions for the weekend, which had it earning about $30 million.
"The Smurfs 2," which opened on Wednesday, fell off the pace considerably by Friday, taking in only about $5.5 million on the first day of the weekend. "The Wolverine" saw a big drop-off from last week, too; it took in $6.4 million on Friday. The domestic box-office performance of both films has been soft, but their studios are counting on strong international demand to pull the movies into the black.
Following the three recent releases, fourth through sixth place on Friday were taken by three of the summer's most persistently successful (and most surprising) films: "The Conjuring," "Despicable Me 2" and "Grown Ups 2." All three films show some signs of slowing, but all are continuing to draw impressive audiences.
The same can't be said for the films in seventh and eighth place. "Turbo" and "RED 2" both pulled in less than $2 million on Friday, and both are in danger of finishing their runs in the red.
