Fox Picks Up Hot Pilot 'The New Girl' with Zooey Deschanel

It's primetime pilot pick-up time, and Fox has started things off right: the network just picked up "The New Girl" to series.

"The New Girl" is a new comedy pilot starring Zooey Deschanel as a teacher who, after a bad breakup, rearranges her life and moves in to a new place with three guys as her roommates. Deschanel will co-star with Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Damon Wayans Jr.

The pilot was red-hot coming into this week so it's not much of a surprise that Fox picked it up to series before the rest of the pilots on the slate. No matter the quality of the show itself, the draw of the Deschanels is undeniable: Zooey's sister Emily has built up a strong fan base through her work on "Bones," and Zooey herself has many fans from her film work, including her recently role in "500 Days of Summer," and her music with her band "She & Him."

"The New Girl" will join other new series "Napoleon Dynamite," "Allen Gregory," and semi-new series "Terra Nova" in the coming year on Fox. "Terra Nova," a Jurassic Park-style dinosaur show with a time travel twist, was supposed to air this season but was delayed.

Here's the real question, though: will Zooey be singing at any point in this new series? They tend to find a way to have her do it in almost every movie she's in.
