Fox Cancels New Show Before It Even Airs
by Andy NeuenschwanderIf you think it sucks to be a show like Fox's "Lone Star," which was canceled after just a couple of episodes, just remember this: At least it wasn't canceled before it started.
That's exactly what just happened to Fox's new show "Hieroglyph," which the network has officially dropped from its schedule and halted production on before it even had a chance to air.
The show, which was set to premiere midseason in early 2015, was going to take place in ancient Egypt and mix history with fantasy and some good old-fashioned personal drama.
But the writers were having some trouble getting on the same page creatively, according to sources, and the show had always been something of a pet project for Kevin Reilly, who has since stepped down as head of the network. When you factor in the fact that the show was pretty expensive to produce, it seems that Fox simply wanted to avoid another "Terra Nova" situation.
Believe it or not, canceling shows before they premiere isn't that rare a practice, especially for Fox: It canceled "Us & Them" starring "Gilmore Girls" alum Alexis Bledel before it got a chance to be on television, and the network axed "Murder Police" before it ever got a chance to contribute to the animated block.
Fox still has eight brand-new series going on air in the upcoming season, including the intriguing "Gotham," which focuses on a young Jim Gordon in the Batman universe.
