Fox Cancels 'American Idol' and Hell Probably Just Froze Over Too
by Andy Neuenschwander
At the height of "American Idol" mania, it seemed that the show would never go away. Back in 2003, the show's season 2 finale drew in a whopping 38 million total viewers, making the reality competition show an absolute juggernaut.
However, those numbers haven't held up over the years, and Fox finally cancelled "American Idol" this morning.
The show was still pulling in a good number of viewers (10.1 million for this past season's finale), but that wasn't enough for Fox to keep the lights on for the 13-year-old show. "Idol" can be expensive for the network, especially when big celebs like Jennifer Lopez are on the judges' panel, asking for many millions in fees to appear for the season.
Fans don't need to worry just yet, though: "Idol" knows how to make pretty much anything a big event, so it will be taking full advantage of its cancellation by making a big deal out of its final season.
The upcoming 15th season of "American Idol" will be the last one, and will still feature the panel of Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr., with Ryan Seacrest hosting as always. The final season will premiere in January.
