First Trailer for 'Maze Runner' Sequel 'The Scorch Trials' Shows the World Outside the Maze
by Andy Neuenschwander
Last year saw the release of "The Maze Runner," another in a string of dystopian sci-fi movies based on a trilogy of YA novels. Those who saw "The Maze Runner" probably knew by the ending that there would inevitably be a sequel...and now the trailer for that sequel is here.
The trailer for "The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials" shows us a bit of the world outside of the maze that Thomas and the rest of the Gladers dealt with in the first movie. Since that maze was all they knew, we can expect to learn a lot of new information about the outside world as the gang does.
Much is left to mystery here, as a new character (played by "Game of Thrones" star Aiden Gillen) greets the boys and warns them that they won't survive out in "the Scorch." We see that the outside world appears to be nothing but desert, but we don't know why or how it happened.
There are other mysterious bits to be answered in the movies (unless of course you've read the books): Newt tells Thomas at one point that they "weren't the only maze," meaning that there was another group going through the same trial. The voice of Patricia Clarkson says that the boys might be the "key to everything," but it's yet to be revealed what exactly the maze trial was for, and what "phase two" hopes to accomplish.
"The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials" hits theaters September 18. Check out the trailer below:
