First-Ever Special Needs 'Wheel of Fortune' Contestant Charms Pretty Much Everyone
by Andy NeuenschwanderNeed a pick-me-up? Just watch all of Trent Girone's dreams come true.
The 21-year-old, who has Asperger's and Tourette's Syndrome, is something of a "Wheel of Fortune" superfan. In fact, he claims that he watched the show religiously ever since he was a toddler, and can answer all kinds of trivia about the show.
So naturally, he was pretty excited when he was chosen to become a contestant after many applications.
"I love the show and wanted to be part of its history" Girone wrote on the Wheel of Fortune blog. "I thought I would do a great job at solving puzzles." Girone has indeed become a part of the game show's history, becoming the first-ever special needs contestant on the show. He also proved that he knows quite a bit about the show's history, as host Pat Sajak quizzed him about past formats that the show doesn't use anymore. Girone nailed that question with an excited "Megaword!"
Unfortunately, Girone didn't win the whole game...he had a bit of bad luck when he hit a Bankrupt spin after nabbing a $10,000 bonus. But he still calls his appearance on the show "one of the best days of my life."
