'Fifty Shades of Grey' Sets International Box Office Record

How was your Valentine's Day weekend? Pretty good? We're willing to bet it wasn't as good as it was for "Fifty Shades of Grey."

The long-awaited movie released in theaters over the weekend, benefiting from Valentine's Day dates and a four-day weekend for many thanks to President's Day. With those factors combined with the book's built-in fan base and the curiosity of non-fans, "Fifty Shades of Grey" opened to just north of $90 million domestic.

That set a studio record for a February release, but it was overseas that "Fifty Shades" really made waves. In all non-U.S. markets combined (a total of 58 foreign markets), "Fifty Shades" earned about $158 million. That makes this the best opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie overseas.

In fact, "Fifty Shades" now holds the record for the biggest launch of all time in 11 foreign markets, including Argentina, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and even a currently war-torn Ukraine.

The movie even managed to land the top-earning first weekend for an R-rated movie in some more conservative countries like the Philippines and Mexico. Other conservative countries like Malaysia refused to let the movie premiere in theaters. In the U.K., the movie earned a restrive 18-only rating, roughly the equivalent of an NC-17 in America.

All told, "Fifty Shades" will come to a global total over the four-day weekend of about $248.7 million. That's Christian Grey money right there.
