Family Entertainment: Nicki Minaj's New Sitcom
by EG
Nicki Minaj might not be the most obvious choice for the star of a new sitcom on the ABC Family network, but she's going to be one. The often-risque entertainer will produce and appear in a new series that is set to film a pilot and this winter and will like make it onto the cable channel's schedule next year.
The series, which does not yet have a title, will be a fictionalized account of Minaj's upbringing and rise to stardom. It will be set in Queens, New York, where Minaj was raised after her family emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago in the 1990s. The situation is ripe for a comedic treatment, given the opportunities for colorful characters, a culturally diverse setting and inspirational stories about the musician/actor's vault to superstardom from humble beginnings.
The series is being produced by Kapital Entertainment, which already has the series Chasing Life and Kevin from Work on ABC Family. The company has also put many other series, including Secrets and Lies, The Mysteries of Laura and Life in Pieces, on other networks. Primarily known for her music and her provocative music videos, Minaj has tried her hand at acting in projects such as The Other Woman and Barbershop 3.
