Fall TV: New Series on The CW

If you think there's too much rehashing of old material going on these days on TV and at the movies, you might be disappointed in The CW's fall 2016 season. Of the three new series coming to the network in the fall, only one of them is based on an original premise. The other two are based on properties from years past, one of them a reboot of a supernatural film, the other a reimagining of a venerable comic book series.

The original series is No Tomorrow, a comedy-drama from the writers of Jane the Virgin. This one is about a young woman who embarks on adventures with a free-spirited young man who thinks the end of the world is near. It isn't technically a TV adaptation of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, but it sounds close.

Frequency is definitely a TV adaptation of the 2000 film about a son who is able to communicate with his deceased father via a ham radio; the situation results in tricky time-travel problems. In the new CW series, the cross-dimension communication is between a woman and her deceased husband, but the same time-traveling problems occur, along with the solving of crimes.

The network's final new series is Riverdale, a reimagining of the world of the classic Archie comics. The Riverdale of the comics was a wholesome small town, but the place where the new versions of Archie, Betty and Veronica live is a dark and disturbing place. This series is from the producer of Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl, so expect similar fantastic goings-on.

Although not exactly a new series, Supergirl will make the move from CBS to The CW in the fall, where it hopes to fit in well with its DC-universe cousins The Flash, Arrow and DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
